Empowering Elders: The E-Rickshaw Project by The One Ummah Foundation in Bangladesh

In the bustling streets of Bangladesh, rickshaws are more than just a mode of transportation; they are a lifeline for countless families. Yet, for many aging rickshaw pullers, the daily grind of pedaling passengers across the city becomes an increasingly unbearable burden. The Elder Labor Support Program, operated by The One Ummah Foundation Bangladesh, is a beacon of hope for these individuals, aiming to reduce their workload and safeguard their health. One of the most impactful initiatives under this program is the E-Rickshaw Project.

The Rickshaw Challenge

Rickshaws, which are small carriages attached to manual bicycles, have been a staple of Bangladeshi transportation for decades. While they offer an affordable and efficient means of travel, the physical demands on the riders are immense. Many rickshaw pullers start young and continue well into their old age, with their bodies bearing the brunt of years of hard labor. Without a safety net for retirement, these aging riders face a grim choice: continue working despite their deteriorating health or fall into abject poverty.

Introducing the E-Rickshaw Project

The E-Rickshaw Project presents an innovative solution to this societal issue. By attaching a battery to the traditional bicycle, the wheels are powered, allowing the rider and passengers to coast with minimal effort. This not only eases the physical strain on the rider but also enhances their capacity to continue earning a livelihood without compromising their health.

A New Lease on Life: Kamal Hawaladar's Story

Kamal Hawaladar, a 54-year-old rickshaw puller, epitomizes the transformative impact of the E-Rickshaw Project. Having lost his father as an infant, Kamal was thrust into a life of hardship from a young age. For the past 40 years, he has toiled tirelessly, navigating the streets of Bangladesh with his rickshaw to support his family. Kamal's family includes four children. His oldest daughter is married, while his second daughter is in the 10th grade. His oldest son drives a battery-operated easy bike, barely making ends meet, and his younger son is still in junior school. The relentless strain of pedaling a manual rickshaw took a toll on Kamal's aging body, leaving him exhausted and in constant pain.

Recognizing his plight, The One Ummah Foundation gifted Kamal with an E-Rickshaw (No. 5). This generous act has been nothing short of life-changing for Kamal. With the assistance of the battery-powered rickshaw, Kamal can now easily transport passengers, significantly reducing the physical exertion required. This means he can work longer hours without compromising his health, ensuring a more stable income for his family.

In Kamal Hawaladar's words, "This E-Rickshaw has given me a new lease on life. I can now support my family without the pain and exhaustion that I used to endure every day. I am deeply grateful to The One Ummah Foundation for this gift."

Broader Impact

Kamal's story is just one among many. The E-Rickshaw Project is making a significant difference in the lives of elder rickshaw pullers across Bangladesh. By alleviating the physical demands of their work, these individuals can continue to earn a living with dignity and less pain. This project not only improves the quality of life for the riders but also brings about positive changes in their families and communities.
